Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is that of a niche, in which there is a lamp; the lamp is in a glass - the glass looks like a brilliant star - it is lit by (the oil of) a blessed tree, the olive, which is neither eastern, nor western. Its oil is about to emit light even though the fire has not touched it - (it is) light upon light. Allah guides to His light whomsoever He wills; Allah describes examples for the people, and Allah knows everything well.

There is consensus among the scholars that the use of word “Nur" for ALLAH TA'ALA in the verse under reference is purported in 'Munawwir' meaning the One who brightens or may be the Master of brightening is referred here as Nur. ALLAH TA'ALA bestows Nur to earth and and the heavens and to everything living there and it's purported to be the Nur of righteousness. Ibh Kathir has reported the explanation put forward by Ibn Abbas (radhiyallahu anhu) that ALLAH is the guide of all livings in the heaven and the earth.

The example of His Light is that of a niche in which there's a lamp 24:35. This is a nice example of ALLAH TA'ALA's Nur of guidance which penetrates into the hearts of the believers.

As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert plain, which a thirsty person deems to be water, until when he comes to it, he finds it nothing, and finds (the decree of) Allah with him, so He pays him his account in full. Allah is swift at reckoning.

Or (their deeds) are like layers of darkness in a vast deep sea overwhelmed by a wave, above which there is another wave, above which there are clouds - layers of darkness, one above the other. When one puts out his hand, he can hardly see it; and the one to whom Allah does not give light can have no light at all.

O mankind, there has come to you a conclusive proof from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a clear light. (An-Nisa [4] : 174)

Ibn Jurayj and others said,"It is the Qur'an.

[Quran 64:8]

So believe in Allah and His Messenger and thelight[i.e., the Quran] which We have sent down. And Allah is Aware of what you do.

So let the Quran bring light to your life and guide you to success by striving to understand and follow what is in it.

O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah alightand a clear Book.

[Quran 5:15]

[Quran 6:1]

[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and thelight. Then those who disbelieve equate [others] with their Lord.

On the Day when you will see the believing men and the believing women, their light proceeding in front of them and to their right hands, (it will be said to them,) “Good news for you today! Gardens beneath which rivers flow, to live therein forever! That is the great achievement,

On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, "Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light." It will be said, "Go back behind you and seek light." And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment. (Al-Hadid [57] : 13)

[Quran 66:8]

O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Theirlightwill proceed before them and on their right; they will say, “Our Lord, perfect for us ourlightand forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent.”

Seek the Light of Allah

Let us strive hard in following the light of Allah and supplicate to Him to give us light the way the Prophet ﷺ used to do whenever he set out to the masjid. He would say:

[Al-Bukhari]

O Allah, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light and in my sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and to my right light, and to my left light, and before me light and behind me light. Place in my soul light. Magnify for me light, and amplify for me light. Make for me light and make me a light. O Allah, grant me light, and place light in my nerves, and in my body light and in my blood light and in my hair light and in my skin light.

Light in heart

Abdullah ibn Hind reported: Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Verily, faith begins like a fragment of white in the heart. Each time faith increases in magnitude, it increases that brightness. When he completes his faith, the entire heart is brightened. Verily, hypocrisy begins like a fragment in the heart. Each time hypocrisy increases in magnitude, it increases that darkness. When he completes his hypocrisy, the entire heart is darkened. I swear by Allah, if you were to split open the heart of a believer, you would find brightness and if you were to split open the heart of a hypocrite, you would find darkness.”

Ibn Wahb reported: Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Knowledge is a light that Allah places wherever he wills. It does not consist of memorizing many narrations.”

In another narration, Malik said, “Knowledge is not knowing many narrations. Verily, knowledge is only a light that Allah places in the hearts.”
